Fortnightly Cleaning: Is It Enough for Your Home?

Is Fortnightly Cleaning Actually Enough?

For most homes, yes. Fortnightly is our most popular clean and gets 15% off. I’d suggest weekly for busy homes with lots of people, and monthly if you live alone and do some light cleaning yourself.

I own and run Northfields Clean, a cleaning company based in west London. Almost every week I’m hiring cleaners, talking to cleaners and working out whether they’ll fit our team and do a good job for our clients. I also talk to a lot of homeowners and tenants about how often they need a cleaner, and the question I hear most is whether fortnightly is enough.

For most homes, the honest answer is yes. Fortnightly is our most requested and most popular clean by some distance. It isn’t right for everyone, though, so I’ll explain who it suits, who it doesn’t and how to work out what your home needs.

Fortnightly sits right in the middle. A weekly clean is a lot of frequency, and a monthly clean is a lot less. For most households, weekly is a bit much unless the home is very busy or very large.

Fortnightly gives you that middle ground. The house never gets to the point where it’s overwhelming, and you’re not paying for a cleaner to come in when there isn’t much to do. For a typical household of three or four people, it works really well, and most of our clients on fortnightly cleans are happy to stay there.

What Actually Happens on a Fortnightly Clean

This is where a lot of people get their expectations slightly wrong, so I want to be clear about it.

When You Need a First-Time Clean

If your home hasn’t been professionally cleaned in the last month, we recommend a first-time clean before regular visits begin. It’s more thorough, and the cleaner can do a lot more in that first visit to bring the whole home up to a good standard. Once that’s done, the regular cleans are about keeping it there. If your home has had a professional clean in the last month, your regular visits can start straight away.

Maintenance, Not a Deep Clean Every Visit

Fortnightly cleans are maintenance cleans. We always tell clients not to expect every inch and every nook and cranny of the house to be covered in a single visit. That’s not what recurring cleaning is for.

The point of having a regular cleaner is that they can maintain the property over time. On each visit they keep the whole home ticking over and then focus properly on different areas. Over a few cleans, everything gets attention, and the house stays at a standard everyone is happy with.

How the Cleaner Decides Where to Focus

Every visit is a little different, because homes don’t get dirty evenly. If the cleaner turns up and the kitchen needs particular attention that week, they’ll do a quick dust down of the rest of the house and give the kitchen the time it needs. Next time it might be the bathroom. That flexibility is what makes fortnightly work so well.

When Fortnightly Isn’t Enough

Fortnightly isn’t always the answer. The main thing that decides it is how many people are using the property. More people means more footfall, more use of the kitchen and bathrooms, and a home that gets dirty more quickly.

For these kinds of properties, I’d usually recommend a weekly clean:

  • HMOs, where several tenants share the facilities
  • Very large or very busy households
  • Serviced accommodation and short lets, where guests come and go regularly

Some of these clients start on fortnightly and quickly realise it isn’t keeping up, so we move them to weekly. Others know exactly what standard they’re after and start on weekly from day one. Either way is fine.

When Fortnightly Is More Than You Need

It works the other way too. We do have clients who move from fortnightly to monthly, and it’s nearly always single-occupancy properties.

If you live on your own, there’s simply less mess. A lot of these clients do a bit of light cleaning themselves at the weekend, so once a month they just want someone to come in, tidy up and give the bathroom and kitchen a proper scrub. Monthly suits them perfectly.

How the Cost Compares

People often assume weekly will cost a fortune compared with fortnightly, but the difference isn’t as big as you’d think. At Northfields Clean, recurring cleans come with a discount:

  • Weekly cleans get 20% off
  • Fortnightly cleans get 15% off
  • Monthly cleans get 10% off

Weekly does get the bigger discount, but the difference between options is usually around £20 to £30. So I’d always say don’t let price be the main deciding factor. Choose the frequency that matches what your home actually needs.

What You Need to Do Between Cleans

Honestly, not much. If you want to give the kitchen a wipe after cooking, it won’t hurt, but you don’t need to clean before the cleaner arrives. That’s our job, and we’ll bring everything up to standard when we’re there.

Our cleaners bring their own cleaning equipment, so you don’t need to have anything ready. The one thing that makes a real difference is keeping floors and doorways clear. If things are off the floor and out of the way, the cleaner can get straight on with hoovering and wiping down instead of spending time moving things around. That means more of the visit goes on actual cleaning.

Why Having the Same Cleaner Matters

Regular cleaning works best when it’s the same person each time. When a client books a recurring clean, we have a conversation with them about what they’d like in a cleaner, and then we match them with someone who suits them.

That’s about personality, not quality. Every one of our cleaners works to the same standard, and we don’t compromise on that. Some clients like a friendly, chatty cleaner, so we’ll send one of our more sociable team members. Others would rather be left alone while the cleaner gets on with it, so we’ll match them with someone who prefers to work quietly.

Once matched, clients keep the same cleaner on a regular basis. The only time that changes is if the cleaner needs time off or there’s an emergency. Having the same person also means they get to know your home, which is exactly what makes the rotating maintenance approach work.

Does the Time of Year Change Anything?

Not really, in my experience. I don’t see many clients changing their frequency because of the seasons or lifestyle changes.

What I do see is people wanting a deeper clean now and then. Spring is the most common time, and some clients ask every two or three months for their next visit to be a deeper one. We can arrange that easily, and it’ll usually be the same cleaner who already knows the home. A regular fortnightly clean with an occasional deep clean on top is a really good combination.

My Honest Advice: Start Fortnightly and Adjust

My bottom line is this: it’s not set in stone, so don’t stress about getting it right first time.

If you’re not sure, here’s a simple rule of thumb:

  • Lots of people in the home, high footfall or guests coming and going: start with weekly
  • A typical household of two to four people: start with fortnightly
  • Living alone and happy to do a bit of light cleaning yourself: monthly might be enough

Then see how it goes for a couple of months. If you started on monthly and it isn’t keeping up, move up to fortnightly. If you started on fortnightly and the house is getting dirty faster than a fortnightly clean can handle, upgrade to weekly. A good cleaning company should be flexible enough to change with you.

Fortnightly is the most popular option for a reason, and for most homes it’s the right place to start.
